Breathing with Horses to Improve the Connection and Performance

When I needed some ideas on a subject to write about someone suggested a subject on the breath, so here it is.

The breath breaths on it's own, we could say the breath is in self carriage like the foot falls of a horse. The breath has its own way, but still your breath can be controlled like the gaits of a horse in walk, trot, and canter.

One day, years ago, I was schooling a dressage horse named Sammy. We were in trot and we were in a metronome connection in movement. We were in a strong intentional trot and as we were going along the connection we had took over my breathing pattern. I began to breath two quick breathes in and one long breath out. I notice that when this happened the connection with Sammy stepped into a magical realm. The amazing performance we were sharing turned into brilliance. Sammy joined my breath and gave himself completely over to me.  He offered more suspension and greater knee and hock action. We were like billows dancing as one and each of us in a leadership state. I was the music and Sammy was the dancer. This marked a new era in my teaching at Stonehenge Arabians and around that time I changed the name of the ranch to Dances with Horses.

Carolyn Resnick & ApolloI then began teaching this way of breathing at my school.  There was a massive improvement in the quality of the connection and performance with my students and their horses. We all found a greater connection and performance from our metronome breathing patterns.

The book I am reading now is called "The Miracle of the Breath" by Andy Caponigro. I have been reading it for about two years and enjoy it very much. It keeps me on my spiritual path.

Many times I will start Sharing Territory with a student by asking them to put their attention on their breath, once they have reached a neutral state from their practice of Sharing Territory and have found an independent connection with their horse.

This first step of bringing your attention to being independent is something that takes some practice.   In this practice of Sharing Territory we can evolve a person's leadership approach so that the horse is naturally looking for their leadership.  From the student's evolving to a higher consciousness their aids can be more effective, lighter, and understood by the horse.

What evolves from breathing practices while Sharing Territory will call your horse to you.  This will offer a safe presence that your horse wants to get in on.

Guided Meditation by Carolyn Resnick

Focus on your breath.

Breath in, breath out.

On the inhale enjoy!

On the exhale enjoy!

Breath in joy till you feel your joyful breath breathing you.

Breath in, breath out,

Like a horse in the sun, appreciating being alive.

You are calling yourself back home to your true self.

Breath in, breath out.

Meet your horse in the field in this way.

He may come and nap at your side.

Breath in, breath out.

Recall the ringing of a bell.

You can hear the silent echo of the bell.

Imagine you are a church tower carrying the spirit of life within you.

Remember again what it is to be alive.

Want nothing, be independent and connected to all of life in a pure state of joy.

Like a child in a waking state of well being.

Remember to remember.

In time, without effort, you will notice that your breath will match the rhythm of your horse’s breath without either of you causing it to happen. We have to stop the “do” and let the intention bring evolution to the deeper connection you are wanting to have with a horse.

The hard part is to allow the freedom of your breath to simply breath, in the most natural way. In the freedom you give to yourself and to your horse, you will create a friendship in trust. These moments are heaven sent. Enjoy!

Thank you for inspiring me to write this blog.

Have a great weekend!  Be on the lookout for new horse and human adventures and may the horse be with you.

Warmly, Carolyn

Spring Online Waterhole Rituals Classes

- Extended Circle is a good beginning class that allows you to read all the materials in the classroom, watch the instructional and student videos, hear the audio lessons and the instructions given to students on the bi-weekly conference calls, AND ask Carolyn questions in the classroom.

- Insider Circle is the next step in your learning that allows you to participate in the classroom by sending in videos of you and your horse, getting personal coaching with Carolyn on your videos during the conference calls, and getting daily directions by asking Carolyn questions in the classroom.  This class is designed to be taken a few times as each time is different.  It is designed this way to be able to help take you to the next level of your training in the Waterhole Rituals.  The personal coaching is different per student so to work at whatever level you and your horse are in.
